I love bragging on my fellow wedding creative partners any chance I get. It’s not every event that I get the opportunity to work with someone so talented as an artist in their field, and with that I need to brag on Sue Minskey Beauty for a second. I had the opportunity to work with Sue on several projects and events last year and am so pleased to hear how much our mutual clients love her work. Not only is she an expert in her field, she’s professional, punctual, and overall a wonderful person to work with. I’m honored to be recommending Sue to my 2019/2020 clients and beyond.
I reached out to Sue with some questions a couple weeks ago and am excited to share some of her knowledge directly with you here. I hope you enjoy this exclusive behind-the-scenes peek into the talent and artistry behind Beauty by Sue!
Behind the Scenes with Sue
Please tell us about yourself by giving a brief introduction on who you are and how you serve the wedding industry. I offer on location hair and makeup services in the Virginia, DC, and Maryland areas. I specialize in soft romantic hair styles and natural looking makeup.
How did you get started as a professional in the wedding industry? I got started 12 years ago while working at the cosmetics retail counters helping brides find makeup items for their wedding day or doing makeup for special events, and it blossomed into a full time on location business after moving to VA a year later.
What sets you apart from other artists in your category? I specialize in making the skin look flawless but very natural. With my background in esthetics and licensing in cosmetology I’m more than just another self taught artist, and I make sure that everything I do is done with the client’s individual needs in mind.
Where do you find your inspiration before/during a project? I like to get to know my clients so that I can create something that fits their style and flatters their looks without making them feel like someone else.
What has been your favorite design to date? Please describe it! I’ve been loving the very soft textured up-do’s this year’s brides have been requesting! They are my favorite styles to do. Very romantic.
What is one piece of advice you would give to today’s bride planning her wedding? Make sure you get all the vendors booked early in the process so that you can relax and focus on the details later. Having experienced professionals will be able to guide you to make the right choices for your day, rather than trying to decide what you want and then trying to force or scramble last minute to make it all fit together. And make sure that ALL your vendors have input on the timeline. We each know how long it takes us to do our jobs, and we should be able to do our jobs in a fluid manner that doesn’t interfere with each other. The month before the wedding is not the time to figure out what is happening when. Something always gets sacrificed or shortchanged on the wedding day, and that’s stress you don’t want while you’re trying to get ready!
What are you most looking forward to in the future of your industry? I’m looking forward to hopefully a return to on location being respected as a specialty and not something that anyone can just “do” for fun. Hopefully the hobbiest will start to realize how much work goes into doing what we do – the hours before a wedding day even happens – and stop undervaluing our careers.
